Lorène Charmetant is a musician, singer, songwriter based in Whitehorse, Yukon, on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.

Hailing from a small village near Lyon, Lorène pays homage to her culturally rich upbringing in France especially in her impressive catalogue of songs in her native tongue. She fostered an early appreciation for worldly and diverse influences, readily available to her while growing up in Europe. That foundational exposure to a broad variety of music and art continues to influence Lorène’s work as a songwriter, and she credits that early exposure for her appetite to explore and accept influences from across many genres. Lorène moves with ease between languages, communicating passion and vision with clarity in both English and French.

Blame it on the moon

Crisp yet rich vocals are punctuated by driving beats, incorporating a contemporary sound that pairs beautifully with Lorène’s experienced voice. A departure from jazz and other more traditional genres, Lorène’s new sound feels like a folk-pop masterpiece – the lyrics and their delivery feel timeless, while the musicality is tangibly current. The folk influence is some of the flavour behind her vocally driven sound, while her jazz background serves those vocals up flawlessly.

Electronic elements are present in an effective but subtle way, serving the songs and supporting – never overpowering all that is Lorène. Choral harmonies emphasize the strength in the vocals, as well as Lorène’s skills as a songwriter. There is a dreamlike quality to her slower ballads, and her lyrics feel like a letter to a friend.

Orée

Influenced by a wide variety of genres, Lorène’s acoustic project Orée roots in folk, jazz and pop repertoire. The compositions pair very personal lyrics with the warm sound of acoustic instruments, and vocals that soar and intermingle in harmony.

Veridis

Deeply rooted in their adoptive Yukon landscape, Veridis is a contemporary and multudiciplinary performance cocreated by Malorie Gendreau and Lorène Charmetant. While combining different mediums including aerial silk, standing hoop, live original music composition, dance, video projection, ot celebartes that place on Earth that helped us dig into our inner foundations.

Here, circus objects are part of a sound and movement poem reflecting that travel into self-depth.

Lorène is writing music that resonates – it’s interesting but calming, stimulating yet comforting, approachable yet unique. Her sound is exploratory while also arriving polished.
